I am a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics. I am writing about a very important issue the danger of ticks. Our children need protection from these silent invaders.
Millions of spirochete are in the fat bellies of deer ticks. Their bite transfers the spirochete into the victim's body. The gentle deer provide a warm blood meal and a free ride. They wander into school playgrounds and back yards shedding ticks. One tick can lay 2,500 eggs. Careful studies show that as deer per square mile goes up, Lyme disease and tick population increase along with it. We must change our laissez-faire attitude on deer control. We empathize with those who love these lovable creatures, but there must be limits. The best solution is to reduce the number of deer by way of a deer management program. As doctors, we believe preventing is the best route for protection of our children.
