Leo Redgate, who has given so much to Fairfield through the nonprofit and affordable movie house known as the Community Theatre, was disappointed to find out Wednesday that someone stole close to $4,000 from a safe at the Post Road location.
The theft occurred sometime between 11 p.m. Tuesday and 2:15 p.m. Wednesday. There are only four to five people who were given the security code of the safe, which was installed about a month and a half ago, according to Redgate. Whoever committed this crime, Redgate said, he wants them to be charged to "the fullest extent of the law."
This theft comes only a few months after Redgate secured a long-term lease to be able to invest millions of dollars into the theater and keep this Fairfield landmark going strong. In addition to giving residents a local movie house with affordable prices, the theater provides teens who volunteer a place where they can hang out, a positive alternative to what they otherwise might be doing with their time. The teens man a lot of the operations at the theater while a few adults get paid to help out when repairs and such are needed.
This week's theft, which occurred during a "great week," according to Redgate, almost makes him think twice about keeping the place open. Rent alone is thousands of dollars a year and repairs throughout the year are costly. However, Redgate won't let the criminal or criminals involved make him close the theater's doors. "I am confident that the police are actively trying to solve this crime and I will leave it in their hands," said Redgate. "It is not fair to the kids who rely on the [Community Theatre Foundation] as a special place in their lives to consider closing it due to the selfish act of just one individual or a few."
