First Selectman Ken Flatto is hoping Fairfield will get a piece of that multibillion-dollar federal stimulus package President Barack Obama signed into law earlier this week.
The town and state Department of Transportation have requested $28 million for the Fairfield Metro Center project, according to an e-mail from Flatto Wednesday afternoon. Kurt Wittek, a principal of Blackrock Realty, is a major player in the project but his company is facing foreclosure action by TD Banknorth. In 2002, Flatto and Wittek signed a memorandum of understanding, laying the groundwork for a third town train station and related commercial development. Two years later, during a groundbreaking ceremony for the train station, Flatto and Wittek, managing director of Blackrock Realty, LLC, acknowledged their work on completing a suitable deal for Fairfield, Blackrock and the DOT. Flatto told the Fairfield Citizen Wednesday, through an e-mail, that seeking stimulus money for the train station project has nothing to do with the fact that Blackrock Realty is facing foreclosure action. The developer would have to give up some of his plan if the foreclosure continues and the developer is not able to live up to its part of the three-party contract.
"The request by the town and the state DOT for $28 million is based upon the fact that this project is shovel ready and will create many jobs as well as enable ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) improvements and traffic mitigation throughout the area, while cleaning up a long dormant brown field," said Flatto.
