Bikes, trikes, scooters, skates, Oh my! July 4 fun in Southport

There was a "wheel-y" big welcome for the Fourth of July at the Pequot Library's annual bike parade through Southport Village. Several hundred youngsters assembled at the downtown "Five Corners" of Southport on the hot holiday morning, astride a collection of bikes, scooters, strollers, skates and wagons, most festooned in a red-white-and-blue array of flags, flowing streamers and colored sparkles. "It's great," said Robert Zarra of Fairfield, whose twin 5-year-old boys Augustine and Arthur were outfitted in collection of Independence Day regalia. The colorful parade meandered down Pequot Avenue, passed through the historic neighborhood and ended at the library, which hosted the community for an afternoon of old-fashioned games and picnicking on its Great Lawn.
"It's become an enormous event, with many, many more components," said Susan Ei, children's librarian, who believes the July 4 tradition started about two decades ago.
