The 'art' of graffiti transforms Southport storefront

Don't call it vandalism. But "Crash" made quite a splash Saturday in Southport Village with a dazzling graffiti palette. To the accompaniment of '80s music booming from a pair of speakers, noted graffiti artist John "Crash" Matos tagged the front windows of the Southport Galleries -- where an exhibit of his work is on display -- as a crowd looked on.
Creating brash images in bold colors from spray paint cans, Matos' graffiti artwork stood out, even in the afternoon's brilliant sunshine, and transformed fa├žade of the 100-year-old restored hardware store that houses the galleries. The window tagging was an outgrowth of the "Hide 'N' Seek" exhibit of recent Matos' works on display in the gallery through the end of the month.
