Book lovers find winter refuge at Pequot Library sale

Within minutes of the doors to the Pequot Library auditorium opening Saturday morning, the room was full of people eagerly browsing for good reading material for the long winter months.
Doug Fried, chairman of the Southport library's mid-winter book sale -- a smaller version of the library's summertime sale, one of the largest in the Northeast -- said the three-day sale has been a favorite of book enthusiasts for the past 15 years. "We are blessed with a very generous community that donates lots of books and we always have a surplus of fiction from our summer tent sale, even though we sell some 150,000 books then," he said. "We first tried the mid-winter sale in 1998, and it worked out very well."
And, Fried added, "Even though this a smaller event, we offer about 10,000 titles, plus records and other media. Winter is a good time for fireside reading and most items are only $1."
