Runners get ready for 33rd Annual Thanksgiving Day 5-mile race, 2.6mile walk

The 35th annual Pequot Runners Thanksgiving Day Five-Mile Race is scheduled for Nov. 22 at 8:15 a.m. at the Wakeman Boys/Girls Club, 385 Center Street, Southport, Conn. In addition to the 5 mile race there will also be a 2.6 mile walk through Southport Harbor for those who prefer the ease of a scenic Thanksgiving Day stroll. “Now in our 35th year, we have always strived to put on a safe, enjoyable event for all,” said Race Director, Jeff Palmer. The recent weather has provided added obstacles but our volunteer corps together with the towns of Fairfield and Westport have come together to eliminate any safety hazards along the courses.
Co-sponsored by The Athletic Shoe Factory of Westport, The Southport Racquet Club, BMW of Bridgeport, Integrated Medical Services of Fairfield, Trinity Episcopal Church and Fred’s Car Wash, the race is one of the largest in Connecticut and the largest five-mile race in the state.
Club President Jeff Palmer expects to surpass the record 5300 entrants registered at last years’ event. “With the continued support from our sponsors we are confident that we will again be able provide significant donations to our designated charities”, said Palmer. The race benefits the Wakeman Boys/Girls Club of Southport, Westport EMS , the Domestic Violence Crisis Center, Fairfield Community Services and the Laddie Lawrence Scholarship Fund (founded by the Pequot Running Club) at Staples High School in Westport.
