Artisan Restaurant New England Cozy with locally sourced fare

Opened in July 2011, Southport-based Artisan Restaurant, Tavern & Garden, housed in the chic Delamar Hotel, offers a New England atmosphere and menu of reinterpreted classic regional meals. The hot spot is a reflection of the vision of Executive Chef Frederic Kieffer, who is also one of three partners in the business.
Kieffer took a moment to chat with FCL one recent afternoon, to share his career journey and define what makes Artisan a stand-apart in the area.
Born in France, just outside Paris, 42-year-old Kieffer attributed his interest in culinary arts to early working experiences as a teen, washing dishes in various cafes then handling food preparation. From the age of 17 to 22, he received formal training in a Parisian cooking school, which required that he intern at several restaurants and be evaluated by the head chefs at each.
An exchange program through Providence, R.I.-based Johnson & Wales University followed, which was Kieffer’s first contact with the U.S. He then came stateside permanently, taking the role of sous-chef at C’est Si Bon Restaurant in Greenwich, initially, then a greater position in New York, with Restaurant Associates, running the group’s restaurants at the Museum of Natural History and other key properties. Stints at the Music Center of Los Angeles and Windows on the World at the top of the World Trade Center’s South Tower, from 1996 to 1999, enhanced his experience. READ MORE:
