Southport windows await decorators

No, they won't be painting the town red in Southport -- at least not during the daylight hours.But families on Saturday, March 31, can use a variety of colors to paint the windows of Southport Village shops with their visions of "Southport in Springtime" in an event that benefits the American Cancer Society.
The colorful fundraiser is planned from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and no reservations are required. Sponsors are suggesting a $10-per-family donation. Paint and all necessary supplies will be provided, along with snacks for children, sponsors said.
The artistic party is sponsored by the Southport Merchants Association and a group called Purple Possibilities, a team in the cancer society's Relay for Life fundraising drive.
In the event of bad weather, the event will be rescheduled later in the spring, sponsors said. But earlier this week, the extended forecast for Saturday called for overcast skies with virtually no chance of rain.
