Southporter Has Run-in with Car Burglar

A Southport resident confronted a thief who was stealing items from his car early Thursday morning, police say. Police believe the thief, who fled the scene of the burglary on foot, is also responsible for three other break-ins in the same area.
The Southport Ridge resident told police that he heard glass shattering outside his home at about 2:15 a.m. Thursday. When he went out to investigate, he saw a white male sitting in the passenger seat of his Jeep, which was parked outside the home. The resident confronted the burglar, and asked what he was doing. The suspect replied, “I’m stealing your (expletive),” according to the police report.
The suspect then shined a flashlight in the homeowner’s eyes as a distraction, and began running on foot toward Pease Avenue. A GPS unit was missing from the car.
Cars on nearby Southport Woods Drive and Anderson Lane also were broken into. In all four cases, windows were smashed on cars parked outside homes. GPS systems were taken from three of the vehicles.
The witness described the suspect as a white male with long blond hair. He was wearing a Yankees baseball cap, a white T-shirt and jeans. Anyone with information should contact the Fairfield police at 203-254-4800.
