Rail service added for Southport race

To ease the traffic and parking crunch for runners in the annual Pequot Runner's Road Race, Metro-North Railroad has added stops at the Southport station near the start of the race on Thanksgiving.
In its 34th year, the race has grown in size significantly to about 4,300 registered runners, which far outstrips available parking near the start of the race, said Jeff Palmer, president of the Pequot Runners Club.
In addition, for a second straight year, the club has also arranged to run a shuttle bus service from Sherwood Island State Park off Exit 18 of Interstate 95 to divert some runners to off-site parking.
"We're hoping more people will use the train service for both eastbound and westbound participants," Palmer said.
The event, which starts at 8:15 a.m., includes a 5-mile run, and 2.7-mile walk. First- through third-place winners in the run receive cash prizes of $300, $150, and $100, and runners in various age brackets with the best times will receive plaques.
Runners seeking to use the Sherwood Island shuttle service should arrive at the park no later than 7:15 a.m., Palmer said. READ MORE: http://www.fairfieldcitizenonline.com/news/article/Rail-service-added-for-Southport-race-2283537.php
