Pequot School in 1915

Photographer: Eugene Hall? The school was built in 1854, the first one on this site. This picture appears in Edward J Speer's Pequot, The Village School, (p 6) with the legend "Pequot School 1915." The picture is credited as "Hall--Courtesy Mrs Nellie Gombas." It is believed that the picture was taken by "Hall, " i.e. Eugene Hall of Center St, who took a number of photographs of Southport. The flagpole in front of the school was erected in 1892, a gift of the Sasquanaug Association. The brick building on the left is the Southport Savings Bank. To its right stands the public signpost which was moved to this location in 1903. (It had stood where the DAR Memorial Fountain is.) The building on the right had been the Disbrow market and also the Charles Bulkley ice cream parlor (side door visible was the entrance to the Bulkley portion of the building). It housed the post office from 1900 to 1926, and an A & P was also located here in the 1920's. The building was razed in 1926.
