Oliver H. Perry Homestead

Southport, Connecticut

Description: The picture of the Greek Revival mansion is identified on the copy owned by Hoyt O. Perry Jr. as follows: "Taken 1889. O. H. Perry homestead. Mrs O. H. Perry in centre; Minnie Averill on right; Hattie Averill on left of Mrs P.; Cornelia Pomeroy on extreme left. Walter Perry with high wheel by elm tree." Walter Perry was the son of John H. Perry and grandson of Mrs O. H. Perry (about age 10 in 1889). A niece of the O. H. Perry's (Mary Perry, daughter of Austin Perry) had married a Roger Averill. The Averills in the picture may be the niece (Minnie?) and her sister-in-law (Hattie Averill?). The house was built for Oliver H. Perry in 1843-44 and was called "The Harborage." It is the subject of a HABS (Hist. Amer. Bldgs Survey) report, CT#302. In the ovals, top left, is a picture of the waterfront, Harbor Road at the corner of Old South, taken in the early 1900's. The origin of the blue/white "print" which combines the 1889 and c 1900 views is unknown.
