Baker Store & Wood Store, Main Street
Southport, Connecticut
Photographer: Wilson & Davis, Bdgpt? These stores were located approximately where the driveway stone posts (south) now are on the property at 139 Main. The store at left was that of George Baker. Here the Southport _Chronicle_ was started in Nov 1867. This may be one of the 1860's photos referred to in the August 1868 _Chronicle_: In July of 1868 "Messrs Wilson & Davis Photographists of Bridgeport" came to the village to take pictures of buildings etc. "These photographs can be seen at the store of George Baker." The Baker store was razed about 1883. The store on the right is the original store of John H Wood, who was also involved in the publication of the original Southport _Chronicle_. Wood oeprated his store here from about 1858 to 1873, when he moved down to the end of Main St and Harbor Rd. The old Wood store building was used for various other business before being razed in the 1890's.
